A Living Will is a written directive allowing you to state what treatments you would, or would not like to incur should you become seriously ill or are unable to communicate your wishes in the future. With so many different treatments available to prolong life or alleviate injuries, certain lifestyle factors can influence what may be amenable to your beliefs or preferences.

Under the Mental Health Capacity Act 2005, a valid Living Will is fully supported but, is not legally enforceable in Scotland, although recognised by the British Medical Association. Whilst it can sometimes be confused with Euthanasia, a Living Will is simply a request for doctors not to give you certain medical treatments and not a request to deliberately end life. A great benefit of a Living Will is that your loved ones know your wishes and are not left to make very difficult decisions without knowing your feelings; similarly, knowing your wishes can help doctors isolate your correct and preferred treatment.

At the Will Writing Company, a Living Will is prepared with one extract to your doctor, one to your attorney and one for you – so you can feel assured that your wishes are accurately followed.
